Leafbird

From the corner of my eye

A lovely bird did flutter by

I turned to watch the silly bird

And laughed, as it was quite absurd

Its gorgeous wings of orange and gold

Spinning wildly, free and bold

Then with a flop it lands at last

Safe and steady on the grass

And it didn’t run when I took a peek

Because that bird, it was a leaf!

I’m lucky enough to live in an area with a rather spectacular Autumn display, a gift I try to enjoy as much as possible each year.

I had gone for a walk one afternoon when the bright yellows and oranges were at their peak, and was happily watching the breeze sending the leaves fluttering down from the branches.

This time of year, the trees are full of little birds, which made the whole scene even more delightful.

Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a little bird land near me. But when I looked closer, it turned out to only be a brilliantly colored leaf.

I couldn’t help but laugh at my mistake, but it was such a magical scene, with the birds and leaves all fluttering together in the breeze, a picture of harmony.

Whenever I encounter real life magic like this, I want to try to capture it, so I can share it with others. I do this through photography, drawing, and also through storytelling.

That’s when I decided to write a poem about the little “Leafbird” that made me smile that day.

I look forward to sharing more stories about the things that inspire me, and if you enjoyed reading it, please check back for more soon!

Remember to smile today!
